THE first edition of this book appeared in 1939 and it is pleasing to be able to report that although its girth has been reduced, this seventh edition. being 100 pages shorter than its predecessor, its stature remains undiminished. This book sets out to advise on the care and management of sick people. It never allows us to forget that doctors treat ill people and not cases, and the use of drugs is always put in its correct perspective amongst other often more important therapeutic measures. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. It is not only a useful book of reference but it can be read with profit, because it is a product of a philosophy of outlook that well becomes our profession. o. L.W
